Gert Schalkwyk converted an 88th minute penalty to earn the Glamour Boys a draw in a six goal thriller on Sunday afternoon at Olympia Stadium. This was after Jermaine Christian had given his side a 3-2 lead in the 54th minute with a scorcher of a free kick.

It was for the second time Bay United were giving away the lead after scoring two gaols in the first ten minutes of the game through Paulus Shipanga and Siyabulela Songwiqi only to allow the Glamour Boys to claw their way back in the game with strikes from Jose Torrealba and Thabang Rooi, scoring his first goal for the Club. This was before the halt time.

Kaizer Chiefs coach, Muhsin Ertugral had made two changes to the team that lost away to Engen Santos last weekend; Gert Schalkwyk replaced David Mathebula with Ghanaian born defender, Jonathan Quartey coming in for suspended Valery Nahayo.

It was Bay United who had the brightest start in the game when Paulus Shipanga fired home with a low shot inside the 18 area. Three minutes later, Gert Schalkwyk came close to grabbing an equaliser for the hosts but his shot went over the bar. Bay United had other plans though, as they added the second goal five minutes later through Siyabulela Songwiqi.

This was following a good work by striker Jimmy Zakazaka who unselfishly laid a pass to his teammate, Siyabulela Songwiqi who had an easy tap in. Two nil to Bay United. Then Gareth Ncaca well taken free kick rattled the cross bar as the visitors searched for the third goal.

The Glamour Boys did not drop their heads though as Jose Torrealba came close with a snap shot following a counter attack involving goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune and Reneilwe Letsholonyane. Then from Siphiwe Tshabalala’ s corner kick Arthur Bartman pulled a good save denying Jonathan Quartey.

The Glamour Boys were finally rewarded at the 28th minute when Jose Torrealba pulled one back following a good square pass from Ibe Zito Ogbonna.

The Glamour Boys started knocking the ball around with confidence as the fans rallied behind the team.

It was not a surprise as they grabbed an equaliser at the dying minutes of first half when defender, Thabang Rooi scored with a powerful shot from a close range.

Half-time score two all.

Chiefs started where they left off in the first stanza when Arthur Bartman pulled a stunning save denying Gert Schalkwyk. Chiefs’ no. 21 found a space outside the box to shoot but Arthur Bartman was equal to the task. It was Bay United who took the lead again when Jermaine Christian powerful free kick from 25 yard found the roof of Itumeleng Khune’s net.

The hosts had their penalty appeal turned down by referee, Mathew Dyer after Jermaine Christian appeared to have handled Jose Torrealba’s strike inside the 18 area. Gert Schalkwyk came close again this time with a header but Bartman pulled another brilliant save.

Ertugral replaced defender Jonathan Quartey with attacking midfielder, Mandla Masango as the Glamour Boys searched for an equaliser. It was Bay United though who came close when striker, Jimmy Zakazaka broke clear but he was brilliantly denied by Bafana Bafana no. 1 goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune. Minute later, Jimmy Zakazaka should have redeemed himself after finding himself with Itumeleng Khune to beat but his shot went wide.

Midfielder, Gert Schalkwyk who had been denied the whole afternoon by goalkeeper, Arthur Bartman had a last laugh as he converted a spot kick to earn his side a draw with two minutes remaining on the clock. This was after referee, Mathew Dyer awarded Chiefs a penalty after Patrick Mayo fouled substitute, Mandla Masango inside the box.

The Glamour Boys should have grabbed a winner deep in the injury time when Siphiwe Tshabalala’s volley outside the 18 area went just wide.

Kaizer Chiefs will be back in the same ground next weekend for their final game in 2008 when they host Platinum Stars.
