Former national under-23 goalkeeper Emile Baron has officially joined league and Coca-Cola Cup champions Kaizer Chiefs on a three-year deal from Norwegian side Lillestrom.

Baron is the first major signing for Amakhosi this year as they beef up the squad for their final push in the Castle Premiership title defence and the African Champions League campaign that gets underway towards the end of this month. The former under-23 keeper will intensify competition in the goalkeeping department.

"It was important to reinforce the goalkeeping department ahead of the forthcoming African Champions League," said club president Kaizer Motaung.

Other keepers are Rowen Fernandez, also a former national under-23 keeper, Tladi Mathibe and Itumeleng Khune from the Amakhosi youth ranks.

"Baron is the calibre of a player we were looking for with that kind of experience, which will go a long way in assisting us in the Champions League where we will be faced with very strong and physical teams," stated Motaung.

Baron - born June 17, 1979 - has represented the national under-23 side on 29 occasions and four for the national team.

Chiefs restart their league campaign on Wednesday with a home clash against Santos and will hope to unveil their new acquisition on the night.

Meanwhile, Chiefs have also confirmed that striker Kabamba Musasa and midfielder Jabulani Mendu will leave for trials in Turkey on Tuesday. The two players, who have seen very little action due to tough competition in the Chiefs line-up, will spend two weeks in Turkey with the prospect of securing lucrative deals.
