Kaizer Chiefs ended 2006 in style with a string of impressive victories, which saw Chiefs end the year by scoring twelve goals in the month of December, and Ernst Middendorp was happy with not just his team's results in the closing stages of last year.

The Chiefs coach was also pleased with his team’s performance, as they went through December unbeaten. The Chiefs coach did pick up a special mention in the Sunday Times newspaper this past weekend; strangely enough it was not in the sports pages but in the social pages.

What was more strange about the mention that Chiefs coach got was that it had nothing to do with football, instead the Amakhosi’s German coach headed a Sunday Times list of the five best dressed men of 2006. Ernst was in good company in the list compiled by Gwen Gill and Craig Jacobs, the former recognized for her ability of having her finger on the social pulse of South Africa. Multiple Olympic winning medallist and swimming sensation Ryk Neethling along with Marc Lottering, Arno Carstens and Pension funds adjudicator Vuyani Ngalwana completed the Sunday Times pick of the five best dressed gentleman of the past year.

Amakhosi coach Ernst Middendorp who unlike a number of his colleagues in the PSL prefers to wear designer suits instead of the preferred track suits, cuts an elegant figure on the touchline during Chiefs games was surprised when he read the paper on Sunday to find that it was his clever dress sense, instead of his tactical or technical acumen or the elegant passing or scoring abilities of his charges that got him a mention in the paper on the last day of 2006.

“I must say that it is different to open up the newspaper and find something being written about you which has nothing to do with football, I am really honoured that the Sunday Times have complimented me in this way and all I can say to the Sunday Times is thank you” said a delighted Ernst Middendorp.

The Chiefs coach furthermore is of the opinion that it is a real honour to get such a mention from Gwen Gill in particular, adding “for a person like Gwen to give me a mention in her column is really an honour, from what I do know is that she goes to many social functions around the country. So she is very knowledgeable on social and fashion related issues, I hope I can keep up the standard in 2007”.

With the festive and New Years holidays out of the way Ernst Middendorp will be looking for his team to add another best to their name, as victory over SuperSport United on Saturday could see Chiefs end off the first weekend of 2007 in pole position in the league.
