Kaizer Chiefs 2 (Chalwe 36 min, Motaung 74 min) Golden Arrows 1 (17. Khanyeza 79 min)

FNB Stadium, Johannesburg

17th December 2005

Kick Off: 20h00

Chiefs notched up their third straight victory with a hard fought 2-1 victory over a resilient Golden Arrows at the FNB Stadium on Saturday night; in truth the score line does flatter.

Arrows came out with goals in mind and Alton Meiring tested Emile Baron in the first minute with a thunderous shot from outside the 18 yard area, the Amakhosi number one was up to the task.

It took Chiefs 26 minutes to create their first opportunity of the game, after some neat passing between a number of players Arthur Zwane picked out Songwe Chalwe, the Zambian international thought he had given Chiefs the lead.

Only to watch on as Phiri in the Arrows goal brilliantly kept out his close range effort. Arrows again seized the initiative and Papi Zothwane hit the cross bar with a well taken shot from just past the halfway line.

Arrows were than punished by Chiefs as Arthur Zwane mowed his way through the Arrows defence down the right and sent in a cross for Chalwe who headed Chiefs into the lead at the far post.

Arrows hit back immediately after the restart when Mabuthi Khanyeza shot narrowly wide of Baron’s goal post.

Arrows continued pressing for the equalizer in the second half and a hatful of chances fell for Alton Meiring who first found Baron in inspired form, and than had a shot ricochet off the cross bar after Kaizer Junior had lost the ball near the half line and Meiring was sent through on goal.

Chiefs killed off the game midway through the second half as Gert Schalkwyk ran on to a defence clearance and found Kaizer Motaung Junior in space he coolly slotted the ball under the on rushing Phiri to double Chiefs advantage in the seventy forth minute.

With time winding down Richard Henyakane’s cross from the right was met spectacularly by Mabuthi Khanyeza who acrobatically rose to beat Baron with a spectacular scissor kick and set up a tense last ten minutes.

Arrows had the chance to draw level in jury time as a shot by Ratsoana was parried firstly parried by Baron, the visitors captain Gumbi came rushing in once again Baron was called upon to spectacularly save at the feet of Gumbi.

On this warm summer’s night in Johannesburg lady luck certainly smiled upon the Amakhosi, Ernst Middendorp will be happy with the three points in whatever form they come.

Chiefs have one game left for 2005 when they take on Black Leopards in Thayandou and will go into that game high in confidence.

After beating Arrows twice for the first time since the Lamontville outfit made it in to the PSL back in the 2000-2001 season.
