The long awaited Soweto derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates failed to produce any goals despite a late charge by the home side at Orlando Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

A win for the hosts, Kaizer Chiefs who took the field on 17 points would have taken them just above Orlando Pirates who were on 19 points before the start of the game.

The Soweto derby returned to the Mecca of South African Football after almost 20 years to mark the iconic moment for South African football.

With the Glamour Boys having registered their first win at the stadium on Wednesday against Golden Arrows they came to Orlando to show who are the “Kings of Soweto” and made their intentions clear Reneilwe Letsholonyane’s strike from 30 yard was pushed over the bar by an alert Joseph.

In a game where the were few opportunities created in particular in the first half, Thulasizwe Mbuyane watched his header shaving the cross bar following a cross from Dikgang Mabalane.

Vladimir Vermezovic had put faith to the team that did the business against Golden Arrows on Wednesday while Orlando Pirates brought back Teko Modise who was rested in the defeat against AmaZulu on the same day.

Vladimir Vermezovic introduced the “Smiling Assassin”, Knowledge Musona in the second half replacing Josta Dladla. Musona who did not take any part in Wednesday’s proceedings made an immediate impact as he won a corner for Chiefs.

From the resultant corner, Kaizer Motaung headed just wide as the Glamour Boys searched for the 601 goal since the inception of the PSL back in 1996.

The Club’s faithful who clearly dominated the visitors, Orlando Pirates in the stands rallied behind their team as Pirates wall of defence showed signs of panic.

On the other end Lucky Legwathi’s thunderous free kick went just over the bar.

This was after referee; Harry Lekitlane awarded the visitors a free kick from 25 yards out after alleging that Reneilwe Letsholonyane had brought down Andile Jali, 0-0 after 70 minutes at Orlando Stadium.

Knowledge Musona forced to parry from a free kick in the edge of the box. Then in the stoppage time Siphiwe Tshabalala’s effort rattled the crossbar denying the Glamour Boys a 21st wins against their Soweto rivals in 47 league matches.

It was also a 20th draw between the two sides since 1985.

6th placed Kaizer Chiefs travel to Mpumalanga on Wednesday, 04 November to honour a meeting against PSL Rookies, Mpumalanga Black Aces.

Kick off for the game is at 19h30 at Puma Stadium.
