Chiefs aiming to break two-year hoodoo
Chiefs aiming to break two-year hoodoo

Posted in News on Apr 12, 2008.

It has been two long years since Chiefs last managed to defeat Mamelodi Sundowns in a league match, that win a day after Valentines Day in 2006, took a David Obua penalty in the 26th minute to ensure a 1-0 win for Chiefs at the FNB Stadium. By the time Chiefs next face Sundowns it would have been 785 Days since that victory, in the four league games since that February 2006 match two have ended in goalless draws and two have been won by Sundowns. This has produced the longest spell that Chiefs have gone with out a win in Premier Soccer League matches since 1996, The Amakhosi will feel that this is perhaps their best chance to break that drought and take three points of Sundowns.

Some pundits are of the opinion that with Sundowns having the possibility of and currently competing on two other fronts, namely the Nedbank Cup and the African Champions league. They are likely not to fashion too much energy on the ABSA Premiership as they are in a better position to win silver ware in those competition, Chiefs though will not be entertaining those thoughts as neither team likes walking out the loser when Chiefs face Sundowns. Muhsin Ertugral will be a happy man going into the match as his team have been on form, and have recently been playing their best football of the campaign which has seen them win three of their last three league matches. The Amakhosi are also unbeaten on the road this season and Loftus will not be too unfamiliar territory to them, with a lot pointing favorably towards them Chiefs will be looking to build on their performances from their last couple of matches in league and cup competition.

Mabhudi Khenyeza aided by a strong midfield could well favor himself scoring in his sixth game in succession, the former South Africa u-23 player has been getting into good goal scoring positions and could well take his goal tally for the season into double figures should he get a brace of goals against Sundowns. Chiefs will be with out defenders Fabian McCarthy and Onismor Bhasera, veteran striker Shaun Bartlett has sufficiently recovered from and Achilles tendon injury to make himself available for selection.
