Chiefs aiming for shining performance against Stars
Chiefs aiming for shining performance against Stars

Five points from five games in 2008 is a statistic that Chiefs would like to change when they face Platinum Stars in Tshwane on Wednesday evening, it could have been a better record for The Amakhosi as they had the opportunity to have notched up win number 2 of 2008 during their weekend clash against Ajax Cape Town. A host of missed chances which included a squandered spot kick by midfielder David Obua, meant that Chiefs had to settle for a draw out of a match which they believe they should have won.

Nevertheless Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral was pleased by his teams over all showing against the league leaders and believes that another well rounded performance like that one will see Chiefs improve on their current league position. Platinum Stars under new coach Miguel Gamondi who took over the mantle late last year has helped the once struggling team to climb well out of the relegation zone and they currently occupy ninth place in the table.

Recent victories over Black Leopards and Thanda Royal as well as a hard fought goalless draw against Jomo Cosmos, has seen the North West based team collect seven points from their first matches of 2008. One thing is for certain that Stars are an improving team and with Chiefs coming off a sound showing against Ajax Cape Town, Wednesday evenings match will make an interesting battle of two teams looking to leave the shadows of the drop zone behind them.

Earlier in the season

In the earlier clash between the teams in October last year Chiefs began the game with Emille Baron in goal and he played his part in keeping his second clean sheet of the season as he held firm against Stars, and made a match winning save in the 85th minute when he threw his body on the line to save a shot from Stars substitute Collen Makgopela.

In all it was a dour goalless draw and both coaches said afterwards that they had expected their teams to have been more creative and deadly in front of goal.

Ertugral’s take

Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral would have liked to have gone into the game with the same starting eleven who did duty for him during the draw with Ajax this past weekend; injuries and suspensions though have hampered his plans.

“This has been the story of our season so far, we have been unable to play the same starting eleven in continuous matches because of injuries and the likes there of. For continuity purposes it would have been best to have had the same starting eleven. With Onismor Bhasera suspended and Siphiwe Tshabalala injured we have been forced to make changes to our team once more, which is not ideal for us”.
