“It was a very good game from our team on Wednesday,” he reflects on the win against AmaZulu. “We showed good fighting spirit, and it was important for us to win that game to boost our morale.”
Cardoso has featured prominently for Chiefs this season playing a part in each of his team’s 17 games in all competitions and has started all 10 of the current season’s league games.
“It was not the easiest game in Durban,” he admits. “Three points is what we needed, and we certainly got them. We keep need to keep going and work even harder.
“We now go to our next game against Cape Town City on the weekend. It is another tough one. We’ve got to collect the three points and we can do it because we have been good on the road if you look at our record in all competitions.”
The 32-year-old has started Chiefs’ last 40 successive league games. He believes that Amakhosi will be ready to face a Cape Town City team, currently occupying fifth place on the log and are not leaving anything to chance in their preparation for Saturday’s crucial league game.
“We hope to continue the performance we displayed on Wednesday,” says an upbeat Cardoso, who is looking forward to the game. ”If we put up another fighting spirit like we did against AmaZulu, we should walk away victorious. I think a win will boost us as we are playing back-to-back matches. Our recovery is important. We had a day off on Thursday to recuperate and we will complete preparations on Friday. Freshening things up and get our tactics right and hopefully get another win.”
The Chiefs defender also thanked the Chiefs fans for supporting the team, and while supporters cannot physically be at the stadium Cardoso was grateful for their support. “We also want to thank our supporters for being behind us and to continue supporting us even when the time are tough. We will come out of what we have been going through and I think it is just a phase that we have been going through.”
Cardoso will be hoping to play just as influential a role in Saturday’s game as he did in the corresponding fixture last season when Chiefs came from a goal down at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town on the 27 August 2019 to defeat Cape Town City 2-1. Cardoso sparked the comeback for Chiefs scoring an equalier in the 76th minute with Chiefs trailing 1-0 before Kearyn Baccus scored the game winner 4 minutes later.
Saturday’s game will be live on DStv Channel 202 at 17:00 at the Cape Town Stadium.
