It is a victory which will be celebrated across the length and breadth of Africa as the continent’s last remaining representative’s in the 2010 FIFA World Cup Ghana, emerged victorious from their round of 16 game against the USA in Rustenburg on Saturday evening to proceed to the quarterfinals where they will play Uruguay who beat South Korea earlier on Saturday during their first game in the knock out phase of the tournament.



With the South African public behind them the Black Stars felt at home against the hard working Americans it was the German born Kevin Prince Boateng who raced with a pass from Kwadwo Asamoah, from the half way line past the US defence to knock Ghana into the lead after just five minutes. His finish was real class as he beat the US keeper Tim Howard with a shot on the ground at his near post.



The United States drew level just past the hour mark when Landon Donovan converted a penalty after Jonathan Mensah had brought down Clint Dempsey, to send the game into extra time. In the 93rd minute Asamoah Gyan did well to control a looping long ball on his chest taking it past two American defenders and then fired it past Howard to give Ghana a 2-1 lead.



At the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany Ghana defeated the USA 2 – 1 when they squared off in Nurnberg in their final group game, for the second World Cup in a row the US are dumped out of the tournament by Ghana.
