Birds in for a torrid fight against Chiefs
Birds in for a torrid fight against Chiefs

Whenever Moroka Swallows and Kaizer Chiefs take on each other sparks are bound to fly and things should not be different when the Soweto giants clash in a Castle Premiership encounter at the Rand Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

After all, it is the Soweto derby and expectations are high as both teams will be looking to register maximum points.

Defending league champions, Chiefs, know that to remain in touch with league leaders Orlando Pirates they will need to deliver a fruitful performance.

On the other hand, the Dube Birds will be out for revenge and will want to restore some pride against the Glamour Boy’s after they were pipped on penalties in the Coke Cup semifinal.

However, if stats are to go by then Swallows are in for a torrid fight against the mighty Amakhosi.

Out of 54 games, Chiefs have come out tops on 35 occasions, there have been 12 draws, and Swallows have only had the better of the Naturena side on a mere seven occasions.

However, history is never something to go by and Swallows will look to disappoint Chiefs.

The Dube Birds have the pleasure of returning to their home venue after the Rand Stadium was re-opened and, with home fans behind them, they will be a difficult side to contain.

Key Players:

Goodman Mazibuko (Swallows): Swallows Captain, Goodman Mazibuko is a valuable player in the Swallows line-up. The midfielder does well to break down opposing attacks and is key in Swallows' building-up attacks. A definite danger-man when the two sides meet on Sunday.

Emmanuel Ngobese (Chiefs): Ted Dumitru has unveiled a gem in midfield maestro ‘Scara’ Ngobese, who was instrumental in Chiefs 1 – 0 win against Santos on Wednesday night at Soccer City. The star was named Man of the Match after grabbing the only goal - an award he is receiving all too often. Swallows will know that, although Chiefs have several danger men, Ngobese must be near the top of the list.

Probable Line-ups:

Moroka Swallows: Greg Etafia, Rufus Mokoti, Mohammed Ouseb, Gary McNab, Peter Petersen, Mark McVeigh, Goodman Mazibuko, Alfred Phiri, Edzai Kasinauyo, Ivan Winstanley, Dennis Lota

Coach: Gavin Hunt

Kaizer Chiefs: Rowan Fernandez, Cyril Nzama, Patrick Mabedi, Siphiwe Mkhonza, Fabian McCarthy, Arthur Zwane, Tenashe Nengomasha, Gerald ibeko, Emmanuel Ngobese, David Radebe, Collins Mbesuma

Coach: Ted Dumitru
