Kaizer Chiefs were drawn at home for their Telkom Cup last sixteen encounter with Moroka Swallows.

The tournament, which kicks off on 26 September, sees the two Soweto rivals come face to face for the second consecutive season in a cup match.

During Tuesday’s lunch time draw held at the plush Wanderers Club in Illovo in northern Johannesburg, Swallows as a result of the fact that they had finished in the top eight last season were one of the seeded teams in the hat. The Amakhosi because of their ninth placed finish in the 2006-07 season were amongst the eight unseeded teams, but did have the luck of the draw so to speak when they emerged with home ground advantage for their Telkom Cup opener.

Siem first official function

New Premier Soccer League Chief executive officer Kjietel Siem was attending his first official function as the head of the league and joked around with those in attendance and said, “this is the first time I am addressing a function as head of the PSL with my work permit of course”.

Siem’s comments were met with laughter and applause. The Norwegian went onto further add, “we at the PSL have been working to ensure that this year's Telkom Cup is better than the previous year, we have come up with a number of new broadcast innovations which we are sure will help to make the viewing experience of the 2007 Telkom Cup one that all the fans will enjoy”.

Siem also wished all participating the teams the best of luck and urged them to play the matches in the best spirit possible, keeping the rules of fair play in mind.

Birds on the menu

When the model kitted out in the Amakhosi gear pulled Chiefs name out of the hat to face the Dube Birds, a number of the Birds fans at the draw were dancing in the aisles when it became clear they would be taking on their old Soweto rivals. The Amakhosi though will know that history is firmly on their side in this encounter, as Chiefs have won four of the four cup matches that the teams have faced each other in since the inception of the PSL in 1996.

The last meeting between Chiefs and Swallows in a cup game came in the semi finals of the 2006 SAA Supa 8 Competition, a game that saw each team have a man sent off and The Amakhosi needed extra time to eventually do away with Swallows as Gert Schalkwyk scored a 103rd minute winner. After Scara Ngobese’s opening goal in the 40th minute was cancelled out by Bevan Fransman’s 60th minute equalizer extra time was needed to separate the teams, who both went into the additional period of play with ten men as Chiefs had Siphiwe Mkhonza sent off after 50 minutes Swallows had a 27 minute numerical advantage before Bjorn Gugger was shown a straight red card for a studs up tackle on Gert Schalkwyk in the 77th minute.
