Kaizer Chiefs striker Shaun Bartlett is currently on the mend following an ankle injury he picked in Chiefs SAA Supa8 semifinal victory over Moroka Swallows on the 24th September.

Bartlett aggravated an old ankle injury in the victory over Swallows and was substituted at the end of normal time, prior to the game entering extra time and was replaced by David Radebe.

As a result of the injury, Shaun was unable to travel to Durban this past weekend and had to watch from the sidelines as Chiefs triumphed over Golden Arrows in Chatsworth. Shaun has, for the past couple of days, been working out in the gym in order to be ready for the challenge of Mamelodi Sundowns on October 14th.

This week the former Bafana Bafana hit man's training regime takes a different turn and will see him undertaking a number of aquatic work outs “Shaun will be doing some work in the gym swimming pool in the coming week, with the idea being to take pressure off his ankle as well as assisting him in building strength in the affected area” said Amakhosi physiotherapist David Milner.

Milner further added that should Shaun’s recovery continue in the same manner that it has over the past couple of days, he should be back at full training early next week.

Bartlett himself is looking forward to being fit and ready for the defending PSL Champions Mamelodi Sundowns, when The Amakhosi host the Brazilians at the FNB Stadium on October 14th.

Said Bartlett “The thing is that I hate missing games, I even underwent a late fitness test in order to prove I could play against Golden Arrows, unfortunately it was not to be. Now my mind is on recovering fully and being ready for Sundowns, the big games on the fixture list are the ones you circle when you see the fixtures for the first time before the season starts. I want to be part of the action for the visit of Sundowns next week, every player loves participating in the big games and I am no different”.

With Shaun Bartlett making welcome progress in working his way back to full fitness and Cyril Nzama training at full steam with Bafana Bafana, Ernst Middendorp will be hoping that the good fortune in the injury stakes remains with The Amakhosi as he would like to go into next weekends crunch PSL game against Sundowns with a full squad of players to choose from.
