Kaizer Chiefs used their Vodacom Challenge opening game this past Saturday against English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur played at the ABSA Stadium in Durban, to make public for the first time the new home jersey that the Chiefs first team will use during the 2007 – 2008 PSL Season.

Along with a new home jersey the club will also be launching a new white away strip for the upcoming season, and will be doing away with a third jersey introduced during the 2003 – 2004 season. Although the Amakhosi went down 2-1 to Spurs on Saturday, many would argue that the result was not fair on Chiefs as they dazzled Spurs for lengthy periods of the game and left their Premiership opposition trailing behind them. So one could say that the initial signs are good for the new kit.

While the fans usually take some time to warm to the new kit, a number of the Chiefs first team players have given their opinion, defender Patrick Mayo said of the new home jersey, “I kind of like the new shirt. It is different to the others that I have played in since I joined Chiefs at the start of the 2003 - 2004 season, I think that this jersey has the right amount of gold and black to truly bring out the colours of the team”.

The Shirt designed by the clubs technical sponsors, Nike in consultation with Chiefs, was put together with the best interests of the players at heart, with the hope of keeping them as comfortable of possible.

“It is always important to feel comfortable with the equipment you use during a game” said Mayo, he continued further by adding “this jersey I believe is an improvement on the previous one in terms of the Dri – Fit technology which helps to absorb the perspiration and basically keep you dry during the game”.

It is not just the needs of the players that have been taken care of with the launch of the new home and away strips, the club has gone to great lengths to ensure that fans of all ages are able to attend Chiefs games in a Kaizer Chiefs replica jersey.

Club brand manager Dara Carroll sheds further light on the subject, “For the past couple of seasons we have had many requests from fans wanting to purchase the jersey for kids, unfortunately none were produced and our younger fans were unable to get the official team replica home and away jersey. So this season we asked Nike to produce shirts for junior supporters as well, and they have been very co-operative and have complied with this request so to all the fans who want to dress up their kids in the official replica Chiefs shirt you can now do so”.

With the new PSL season just three weeks away Chiefs fans can take note of an important date in the calendar, which is Monday 6th August as this is the day that the 2007 – 2008 Kaizer Chiefs Home and Away Strip.

Will make its eagerly awaited debut on the shelves of various retailers around the country, kaizerchiefs.com will keep you informed as to where the jersey will be available.
