Muhsin Ertugral leads his team to Cape Town on Saturday afternoon as his team travel down to the Mother City for Sunday afternoons match up against Santos, who like The Amakhosi are at the lower end of the table and with both teams aiming to improve on their standings the Athlone Stadium will be the place to be on Sunday in Cape Town.

Chiefs go into the game on the back of three consecutive league draws and will not be aiming to come back from Cape Town with out the full compliment of points, once again though The Amakhosi go into a game with set backs as striker Shaun Bartlett still battles to fight off an injury he picked up during the Telkom Cup Final victory over Mamelodi Sundowns. Left back Onismor Bhasera will also have to sit out the game the Zimbabwean international received his marching orders in the 82nd minute of Chiefs midweek draw with Amazulu.

The void left by Bhasera at left back could well be full filled by Ditheko Mototo and it seems highly likely that Chiefs will remain unchanged, and could well begin the game with Kaizer Motaung Junior and Mabhudi Khenyeza up front. Kaizer Junior got his first league goal of the season against the Usuthu and Chiefs player of the year from last season, will be aiming to keep his account ticking over.

Santos got a much needed win in their last league outing against Bloemfontein Celtic and will be buoyed by the fact that they managed to come out of a very tough encounter over a team placed much higher than them with a win.

The history

Chiefs and Santos first met in the second season of the PSL during 1997 – 1998 and it was a game won by The Amakhosi, thanks to a Thembinkosi Biyela finding the games only goal. During the following seasons Chiefs were defeated 4-2 in Cape Town by Santos, that loss being one of two defeats that Santos have been able to inflict on the Amakhosi in 20 league meetings between the teams.

Back in 1998 – 1999 it was Jerome McCarthy brother of Benni McCarthy who proved to be Santos match winner, his performance against Chiefs eventually lead to him becoming a Chiefs player the following season.

Last seasons two league matches between the teams saw Chiefs win the first match in December 2006, while Santos won the return match which was played in Port Elizabeth, it was the first time since the 1998 – 1999 season in matches between the teams that over the two games in a season the home team had won each time.

The away match between the teams last season also made history as it was the first time in PSL history, that a match had been officiated by a female referee. When Chiefs and Santos last met in a league game that was played in Cape Town, Chiefs ran out comfortable 3-1 winners with Patrick Mayo and a Gert Schalkwyk brace winning the points for Chiefs.

Look out for

Two back to back impressive performances from Derrick Spencer which included his man of the match showing against Sundowns, has seen the hard attack minded defender keep his place in the Chiefs starting eleven. Spencer after wonderful man marking jobs on both Lerato Chabangu and Dumisani Ngwenya, he will be again looked upon to keep shape in the centre of defense. With Tinashe Nengomasha returning to action Spencer could be asked to play further back, and will have to keep the likes of Erwin Isaacs and Romano Scott in check.

Muhsin Ertugral has a problem he would like to have any time as he has two goalkeepers playing on top of their game; Itumeleng Khune was the hero in the shoot out during Chiefs Telkom Cup victory over Sundowns.

He was unable to play against Amazulu on Wednesday evening and that presented Emille Baron with the opportunity to show that he is by no means ready to throw in the towel, Baron a former Bafana number one made a number of breath taking saves at point blank range to deny Amazulu.

Given his midweek performance could well take the place between the sticks, given the fact that in three games this season he has only conceded one goal could well work in his favor.

From Santos watch out for Romano Scott the younger brother of Bloemfontein Celtic Striker Carlo Scott, found the back of the net against the team his brother plays for during Santos recent victory over Celtic.

He was aided by a long ball from Musa Otieno the veteran Kenyan defender demonstrating that he is still capable of causing damage with long balls from defense up the field. Eleazar Rodgers was perhaps the find for Santos last season and while as a team they might not have found the results they wanted, he does remain a potential threat to opposition defenders.

His lanky frame makes him a target man for the Santos aerial assault, Rodgers gets goal side on many occasions during a match and will need to be taken care of.
