New Peter Mokaba stadium, Polokwane

Kaizer Chiefs won their fifth successive Betway Premiership match on Wednesday evening when they soundly defeated Magesi 4-1 at the new Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane.

Flavio Da Silva opened the scoring with a brilliant piece of individual skill before Wandile Duba added a second before halftime. Mduduzi Shabalala made it 3-0 in the 62nd minute and Khanyisa Mayo put the cherry on top with seven minutes remaining after Diteboho Mofokeng had pulled one back for Magesi in the 69th minute.

Chiefs remain firmly in third place in the league standings, with 45 points from 23 matches and look to chase down second spot in the remaining weeks of the season.

The match took a while to get going, although Chiefs laid siege to the Magesi goal almost immediately. However, notwithstanding commendable effort from both sets of players, there were too many misplaced passes on either side for any constructive build-up to develop on what was a heavy surface.

It took until the 33rd minute for the first meaningful passage of play but it was worth the entry fee alone and put Chiefs on the scoreboard through Da Silva who, back to goal when he received Glody Lilepo’s headed pass, flicked the ball up off his thigh and turned 180 degrees in one motion before finished with clinical precision inside the far post on the volley. Amakhosi now had their tails up and Da Silva brought a save out of Elvis Chipezeze with a rasping shot from outside the box a couple of minutes later. Yet, the fans that filled the stadium didn’t have to wait long for number two, which arrived in the 37th minute, courtesy of Duba’s fourth goal in his last five games, a well-taken far post finish as the ball reached him after Chipezeze had failed to clear a corner from the left.

With a healthy lead and knowing Magesi would have to come forward if they had any hope of salvaging something from the game, Chiefs sat off and tempted the hosts onto them, looking to spring onto the counter-attack and exploit the space Magesi would need to leave in their search for goals. One such foray led to Thabiso Monyane forcing a save from Chipezeze on the hour mark when put into space by Shabalala. Reeve Frosler then replaced Monyane and had an immediate impact, as Shabalala turned from provider to scorer when he fired home Frosler’s cut-back to net Amakhosi’s third goal in the 62nd minute.

Duba, with a header, and Khanyisa Mayo, a halftime replacement for Da, with a free kick, both went close to a fourth before Magesi pulled a goal back through Diteboho Mofokeng’s header in the 69th minute, but the Glamour Boys continued to push forward, with Lilepo and sub Mfundo Vilakazi trying their luck without success.

Frosler notched up his second assist of the night when he crossed for Mayo to head home from very close range in the 83rd minute to emphasise the dominant nature of the performance.

This fantastic outcome will keep everyone at the Club focused on putting in a similar shift at the same venue against Polokwane City on the weekend to build confidence going into the Soweto Derby the following weekend.
