The Amakhosi will try to forget their only opening day defeat since the inception of the PSL in 1996 – 1997, which ironically was at the hands of SuperSport during the opening game of 2002/2003 season when they were beaten 2-1. The meeting between the two teams on the opening day in 2002 – 2003, represented the only time since the inception of the PSL in 1996 – 1997 that Chiefs have met Matsantsa on the opening day of the season.

Chiefs and SuperSport have a history and long standing rivalry, having met no less than 32 times in league encounters since 1985, with honors dead even between the two teams, with each having won 11, drawn 10 and lost 11 of the 32 games.

The last time The Amakhosi recorded victories in both league games against United in a season was way back in 1998/1999, when they first defeated United away from home in spectacular fashion with a 4-2 victory Chiefs followed that up later in the season with a 2-0 win at home. They will be looking for a repeat of those results this season, as United are slightly deflated having lost a number of key players during the off season.

That set of victories for Chiefs came three seasons into the PSL after the first three encounters between the teams had ended in a stalemate, SuperSport then drew first blood as they recorded the first win in a PSL game between the two teams with a 2-0 victory in the second meeting between the two teams in 1997-1998.

After the 1998 – 1999 wins The Amakhosi had to wait almost six seasons for their next victory over United, which came in dramatic fashion during Chiefs penultimate game of the 2004-2005 season.

Scara Ngobese grabbed a goal in the game with time fast running out, and handed Chiefs victory. They followed that win with another a few days later against Bloemfontein Celtic, which ultimately meant that Chiefs pick-pocketed close rivals Orlando Pirates for the PSL crown. That game in 2004 – 2005 could possibly be described as one of the most dramatic between the two teams yet.

Current Amakhosi defender Patrick Mayo, who scored a combined total of three goals against Chiefs in the 2001/2002 and 2002/2003 seasons during his time at Supersport, will in all likelihood miss the chance to settle the score with his old team, as he is presently away taking care of some personal matters relating to a family bereavement.

Speaking just over a week ago (before his mother passed away) to kaizerchiefs.com Mayo was buoyant ahead of the league opener and was confident that Chiefs would get off to a winning start against Matsasantsa. He was also looking forward to the game as he saw it as the perfect opportunity to get his name on the scoreboard for the Amakhosi this time around.

Chiefs will look elsewhere for goals and although Louis Agyemang has not found the back of the net as much as he would have liked, he does boast a proud scoring record against Supersport United as he scored three goals against them last season.

Agyemang found the net when Chiefs drew 1-1 with United at a rain swept Loftus Stadium in November 2005, he then scored a brace as the Amakhosi triumphed 3-1 over United in the Round of 32 in an ABSA Cup game in March this year.

He was also the only Chiefs player to score against SuperSport in a league game this past season, and he is confident of his teammates and his own abilities to deal with the threat of United; “We are going to go all out and win that match, we want a picture perfect start and personally I have a good scoring record against them and it is a record I definitely want to uphold” said Agyemang.

Chiefs will certainly be going into the season with great confidence, having beaten the formidable Manchester United in a nail biting 5-3 penalty shoot-out in the Vodacom Challenge final. The fact that Chiefs last league game of last season was a 1-0 defeat at home to United will be added impetus for The Amakhosi to want to gain victory over an old Achilles heel in the form of SuperSport United.
