The race to enter the 2006 Telkom Charity Cup is hotting up as we enter the last week of voting, the vote lines will close this Friday (28-07-06), at midnight and the official Charity Cup website will not be updated after 20h00 on Tuesday (25-07-06). As the final week began The Amakhosi started off the week in second place but were replaced on Monday afternoon by Orlando Pirates who had entered the weekend in fifth spot.

Overall the voting has been a roller coaster ride for Chiefs who last week had found themselves in sixth position at one stage of the voting. This past weekend has seen the most frantic voting with Chiefs amassing more than 10 000 votes a day over the weekend.

Chiefs began the weekend in fifth position with 104 348 votes and climbed up to second spot on Sunday before being knocked back to third place by Orlando Pirates who had fallen to sixth place over the weekend.

ARE YOU CONFUSED YET?

As at Monday afternoon PSL Champions Mamelodi Sundowns lead the standings with a 155 424 votes, Pirates had 138 824 votes and The Amakhosi were slightly behind on 136 725 votes.

Chiefs won the first ever Telkom Charity Cup in 1986 beating Bloemfontein Celtic by a goal to nil after extra time. All that while ago, twenty years back the tournament was known as the Iwisa Maize Meal Spectacular. The tournament underwent a name change in 2000 when Telkom took over the sponsorship, The Amakhosi have won the one-day soccer spectacular on ten occasions.

Chiefs have a strong tradition in the Charity event and set a record when they won the first five events from 1986 through to 1990. Cape Town Spurs who defeated Vaal Professionals in the final of the 1991 tournament then dislodged Amakhosi as Champions.

As it presently stands Chiefs are on track to qualify for the 20th edition of the annual pre season opener and will be looking to do as well twenty years on after their inaugural success in the event.

In other news, Coach Ernst Middendorp had given the team a day off on Monday and will return to training on Tuesday as the team prepares for its penultimate pre-season tournament. Chiefs will be on the road again as their pre-season travels take them to their fifth province for their third tournament, as Chiefs along with Bloemfontein Celtic, Moroka Swallows and Super Sport United will contest the Mangaung Cup, which will be played at Vodacom Park in Bloemfontein this Sunday.
