The Kaizer Chiefs legends went on a stroll in the lowveld on Sunday afternoon when they played in front of a capacity crowd at the Kwa- Nyamzana Stadium outside of Nelspruit in Mpumalanga. The Chiefs legends team boasting the likes of former Amakhosi legends Rudolph Seale, Thabang Lebese, Ryder Mofokeng, Ntsie Maphike and Able Shongwe. Played out a thrilling 4-4 draw against a Nelspruit Invitation XI coached by former Chiefs and Bafana Bafana defender David Nyathi, with the Chiefs legends entertaining the large crowd with some sublime skills and neat touches a throw back to a by gone era.

Four goal first half

Tshepo Molatedi shot the Chiefs legends into the lead inside the first ten minutes of the game, in truth the Amakhosi oldies could have been a number of goals ahead by the time Molatedi scored the opener. Another former crowd favourite Thabang Lebese who has been on target for the legends in their last five outings, kept up his good scoring form and doubled the Chiefs legends advantage mid way through the second half. The home side found a way back shortly after the half hour mark and levelled matters soon afterwards to ensure that the teams left for the half time break tied at 2-2.

All Square after 90 minutes

Having lost their two goal advantage in the first half the Chiefs legends were intent on getting back in front early in the second half, some neat interchanging of passes culminated in Phillip Mabena rounding off a well worked move to put the Chiefs legends 3-2 ahead. The lead lasted a couple of minutes before the home team again found away back once again against the run of play, the Amakhosi went 4-3 ahead when Mabena completed his brace with a second goal just past the hour mark. Mabena’s second goal looked like it had done the business and the Chiefs legends were on their way to victory, but it was not to be as the Nelspruit team for the fourth time in the game managed to find an equalizer late in the second to ensure that the match ended in a dead rubber.

Enjoying the occasion

The Chiefs legends team skippered by Ryder Mofokeng have in the past few months played in a number of testimonial and exhibition matches around the country and as Mofokeng explains, the Chiefs legends relish the opportunity to bring back old times “For the legends team going on a road trip allows us to talk about old times, as well as get together with old mates and have a good time. Like matches like Sunday’s helps us to demonstrate that even though old age might have crept up on us we are still capable of scoring a goal or two. More importantly we really enjoy entertaining the large crowds who turn up all over the country to support us, we had a tremendous reception in Nelspruit and it is good to see that the fans have not forgotten the guys and what they achieved for the club.
