Kaizer Chiefs 1 (McCarthy 12 min, Mototo 68 min) Dynamos ( Modabi 63 min)

Date: 18th February 2006

Competition: Premier Soccer League

Venue: FNB Stadium, Johannesburg

For the first time in 2006 and the for only the second time this season, Kaizer Chiefs have perched themselves on the top of the PSL table.

Chiefs were made to work all the way for a valuable three points which saw them propel above Sundowns and Pirates by a plucky and resilient Dynamos team.

Fabian McCarthy who was on the score sheet when Chiefs beat Golden Arrows in September last year on the previous occasion Chiefs lead the standings this seasons put the Amakhosi on their way with a goal on twelve minutes. Ditheko Mototo, like McCarthy, scored his second goal of the season late on to ensure that Chiefs left the stadium as PSL log leaders.

Although the game was played at a pedestrian pace for most of the ninety minutes of game time Chiefs created the better opportunities and started carving open Dynamos early on.

As David Radebe once again proved to be a nuisance for the opposition defence with his mazy runs, on eight minutes he was able to send a ball across the face of goal but Songwe Chalwe was unable to connect with the ball.

Chiefs did not have to wait long to take the lead as four minutes later Fabian McCarthy had the ball in the back of the net, after he toe poked a ball home from close range off an Arthur Zwane corner. McCarthy made a well timed run into the Dynamos penalty area and was left unmarked as he pushed the ball over the line past a stranded Sanudi in the Dynamos goal.

The lack of goal mouth action in the first half was covered up in the second as Chiefs once again created good goal scoring opportunities but were wasteful, as Mototo cut a pass across the Dynamos goal. Kaizer Motaung Junior ran on to the pass and from close range shot wide, with the goal at his mercy and should have put Chiefs 2-0 up.

Ten minutes later Kaizer Junior once again wasted a good chance to double Chiefs lead as he shot straight at Sanudi when he could have better placed the ball. Sanudi though for his part must be credited for coming quickly off his line to keep Dynamos in the game.

Dynamos were rewarded for their persistence as James Modabi struck to give Dynamos the equalizer, which than spun the Amakhosi back into action. Five minutes after Dynamos equalized Chiefs were back in front as Louis Agyemang with his back towards the goal turned and rode for challengers before laying off the ball to Ditheko Mototo who struck the ball sweetly to give Chiefs the lead.

Chiefs held on to take the lead and their place on top of the league standings, with games against Sundowns and Cosmos in the next seven days Chiefs will be looking to take the momentum with them into these games.
