Kaizer Chiefs, in its endeavours to break down cultural and racial barriers in the country, have embarked upon a campaign of inviting teams of different racial and cultural mix to pit themselves against the various Chiefs teams ranging from the juniors to the Chiefs legends and celebrity team in pre-match curtain raisers.

Prior to the Amakhosi’s game against Golden Arrows this past Saturday, the Kaizer Chiefs celebrity team took on a team from Mayfair in Johannesburg called Mayfair United. The Mayfair team comprised of players of mainly Indian descent whose families have been in the country for many years.

Chiefs afforded them the opportunity to play under the lights at the FNB Stadium and get the feel of a big stadium and playing in front of a sizeable crowd.

As the Mayfair team were called in as a back up to the original team meant to take the field against the Chiefs celebrities, no one gave them much hope. United stunned the onlookers though as they ran out 4-2 victors over the Chiefs celebrities.

In an entertaining and fast-paced game the visitors clearly showed that they were not at FNB to make up the numbers, with some neat inter passing and a number of sublime touches.

The club will continue to use its curtain raisers as the opportunity for various teams from in and around Johannesburg to have the opportunity to showcase their skills at a stage that many might not get the opportunity to play on.

Chiefs will carry on with their efforts to use soccer as a tool to unite people and bring down barriers.
