Kaizer Chiefs will open up the Nedbank Cup by hosting Ajax Cape Town in the round of 32 on Friday March the 14th at the Vodacom Loftus Stadium in Tshwane, Chiefs the 2005-2006 South African Cup Champions were drawn to face the defending Cup holders during Monday evenings draw.

In what was one of five all PSL clashes for the opening round Chiefs will be looking to depose of the holders and with R 6million prize money for the winning team, there is plenty of incentive for the teams to fight all the way to the final on May 24th.

Chiefs will be hoping that Loftus brings them the same kind of luck it did in the first half of the season when they played three of their four Telkom Knock Out matches at the venue, including the final against Mamelodi Sundowns. Which saw The Amakhosi defeat the Brazilians on a penalty shootout to collect their first piece of silverware for the season.

Chiefs will also be looking to over turn their current record against Ajax in this particular competition, the two teams met in consecutive seasons when the competition was still known as the ABSA Cup. In March 2003 the teams met in the round of 16 at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town, after 120 minutes of with out any goals penalties were needed to separate the teams and it was Ajax who triumphed 5-4 in the shootout.

The following season in April 2004 it was in the round of 32 that the teams squared off once more, this time Chiefs were the host but Ajax managed to walk off the victors.

That match in Mmabatho four years ago was the last time Chiefs and Ajax met in a cup game, in total the teams have met five times in cup competitions since the 1999 – 2000 season. Of those games the Amakhosi have won two while Ajax have been the victors on three occasions.
