Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Martin Zwane who passed away earlier this week was a gentleman and a player who epitomized the spirit of fair play.

Zwane was a tough but fair tackling combative defender.

He joined the club during the 1997/98 season and made his debut for Chiefs during a 2-0 victory over Wits University (BIDVest Wits) on the 6th November 1997.

In his first season with the club, Zwane managed to battle off stiff competition and found his way into the starting lineup towards the end of the season and lined up in defense alongside the likes of Robson Muchichwa and Neil Tovey.

He started eight league games and was a substitute in another during his inaugural season with the club; he made four more appearances that season three of them as a substitute and one as a starter in cup competitions.

That included two substitute appearances during the two legs of that season’s Rothman’s Cup Final which Chiefs won in December 1997 defeating Mamelodi Sundowns in the second leg on penalties.

Zwane’s break out season for the club was during the 1998/99 campaign wherein he started in a total of 22 league games and played four more as a substitute.

He also contributed by scoring three goals that season with his first goal for The Amakhosi came against Wits on the 10th August 1998 during a 1-1 draw in a PSL game.

Zwane played a big role in helping Chiefs reach the Rothmans Cup Final that season and again they triumphed over Sundowns in the final.

He also played a starring role as Chiefs reached the BOB Save Super Bowl Final but were beaten by SuperSport United in the Final.

In his third and final season for Chiefs which was during the 1999/00 season he started in fifteen league games and also featured in a CAF Cup game. He won his third piece of silverware with Chiefs that season as they defeated Sundowns once more in a Cup Final this time it was in the final of the BOB Save Super Bowl.

Zwane left Chiefs at the end of that season.
