Kaizer Chiefs’ Legends team will face their counterparts from Bloemfontein Celtic in the Toyota Cup on Sunday, 28 July, at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein, as a curtain raiser to the pre-season friendly between Kaizer Chiefs and Tanzanian club, Young Africans. The Legends game will kickoff at 12h30, ahead of the main event at 15h00.
Amakhosi Legends team coach, Thabo Mooki, expressed his “delight” at the upcoming fixture, a game that he believes “will entertain and excite the fans”.
Mooki, who faced Celtic numerous times as a player, is eagerly anticipating playing in a city where he has fond memories.
“I vividly remember winning the league title against Celtic at the Toyota Stadium in 2005”, he recalled, adding, “We have a number of players in our team who always enjoyed playing Celtic and this game will be no different.”
The former Chiefs number 12 is also happy to welcome some new faces to the Legends fold.
“With all of these games, we try to give a variety of players the opportunity to feature. We are happy to have Siphiwe Tshabalala, Fabian McCarthy and Stanton Fredericks back, and are buzzing to have Bernard Parker in the team for the first time,” Mooki reveals.
For former Chiefs midfield enforcer, Willard Katsande, whose competitive edge has not waned in retirement, there is no friendly game when representing Chiefs.
“The thing about our legends games is that we are players who transcend a few generations of the club,” he explains, “When we wear the jersey, we go out there to enjoy ourselves and win for the fans.”
Katsande is ready for the challenge that will be posed by Celtic’s legends and has drawn inspiration from his own stats as a Chiefs first team player for the outing.
“In the 16 league games I played for Chiefs against Celtic, I only lost twice. We won seven and drew seven. We kept 10 clean-sheets. I always enjoyed playing them and not losing to them,” he says with a wink and a cheeky smile, “This game will be no different.”
